BOLIVAR — The East Newton Patriots and Lady Patriots competed Saturday in the Southwest Cross Country Coaches Association meet at the Bolivar Municipal Golf Course.

On the boys side, East Newton placed fourth among 31 pointing schools with 148 points. Webb City won with 64, followed by Bolivar at 125 and Nixa at 133, all bigger schools than East Newton.

All five East Newton boys runners finished in the top 60, a neat feat in a race with 271 runners.

Jacob Bennion, a junior, led the Patriots in 13th place with a time of 17 minutes, 22.01 seconds, while freshman Kelton Sorrell placed 16th in 17:31.97, freshman Gabe Bergen 26th in 18:00.44, freshman Garrett Downum 42nd in 18:24.93, and senior Layton Earll 60th in 18:43.75.

East Newton head coach Jake Holt lauded the potential of the freshman class entering this season.

Glendale senior Nicholas Ondr — taking advantage of the graduation of former Webb City standout Ryan Riddle — won the individual crown with a time of 16:23.42, over 12 seconds faster than Webb City junior Haddon Spikereit.

On the girls side, East Newton finished 15th with 388 points, among 22 pointing schools.

The Lady Patriots were paced by freshman Laynee Casady, who finished 12th in 21:03.91. Her freshman classmate Ella Rader was 86th in 24:38.70, sophomore Maci Renner 93rd in 24:58.48, freshman Jasmine Hill 113th in 26:24.33, and freshman Sierra Martsolf 172nd in 34:39.47.

Ozark twin sisters Alexis and Brocklyn Barber finished 1-2 in 19:43.64 and 19:59.36, respectively, and were the only girls finishers to post sub-20:00 times.

Meanwhile, the Carl Junction Lady Bulldogs won the team crown with 67 points. Ozark, despite the finish of the Barber twins, came in fourth with 125 points.
