Alcohol may have played a role in the death of a man found dead on the Burlington Northern railroad tracks at about 2 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Front Street and Jefferson Avenue.

According to Sgt. Peter Russell with the police department, a 22-year-old man identified as Marcos Rios was found on the tracks by railroad personnel after being struck by a train. Next of kin have been notified, Russell said.

“It looks like it may have been an accident and alcohol may have been involved,” Russell told the Daily News this afternoon.

Police are presently talking with two people who last saw Rios prior to his death, Russell said. The sergeant added there may be other possible witnesses in the case.

A toxicology report has been ordered and police are currently working with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department and the county coroner’s office to determine if an autopsy is warranted.
