Area singers are invited to audition for Heartland Opera Theatre’s production of Amahl and the Night Visitors on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 25 and 26, with four performances scheduled in December, including one in Carthage.

The auditions will be held on the campus of Missouri Southern State University in Joplin in room 108 of the Music building from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Singers are asked to perform an art song or aria; an accompanist will be provided.

The six member cast will include Amahl, boy soprano; his mother, soprano; the three kings, including two baritones and a tenor; and the kings’ page, a baritone.

The opera is sung in English. Composed by Gian Carlo Menotti in 1951, Amahl was the first opera to be commissioned for television and became an instant classic, performed frequently around the country at Christmastime.

Set on Christmas Eve, the story concerns a young crippled boy who is visited by three kings on their way to see the Christ child. A miracle occurs and the boy joins them on their journey to Bethlehem.

The HOT production, directed by Breana Clark, is scheduled for Dec. 13, 14, and 15, and will be performed in three area churches in Joplin, Carthage and Neosho.
