How many apple pies can 60 bushels of Jonathan apples can make?

A little more than 1,000 pies.

Around 40 volunteers have been working at the Neosho’s First Christian Church making the pies.

“We have been doing this since 1978,” said pie maker Beth Masters, “It has been a great time, we have had fun.”

Thirty-three years ago, a small group of women came together to seek a fundraiser. The idea of a bazaar seemed to be worn out. The answer came upon to make apple pies. That year, after several days of labor, the group turned out 75 pies. The effort grew and men joined the effort and the name of the group became pie makers.

There is a lot of work that goes into the pie making. Looking at the group, they are in different stations, similar to an assembly line.

How it all works
As the apple pie makers enter the church, each of them starts working at different stations. The stations, which represent an assembly line, consist of the peelers, slicers, dough makers, the rollers, the spice people, the pie assemblers and the pie baggers/packaging in the freezer.

One of the first steps is the coring and the peeling of the apples. Also the night before, the dough is made.

A pizza roller machine is used and then the dough is cut to size to be put in the pan.

Once the coring and the peeling are complete, then comes the cutting up of the apples into small wedges or pieces. The apple pieces then go to the kitchen, where they wait to go into the pie dough.

Once the dough is put into the aluminum foil pan – which is a 9-inch pan, the apples and the different spices are put into the pies. The pies are not cooked, rather bagged in plastic bags along with instructions on how to prepare them and are placed in the freezers.

The price for the apple pie is $8 and the proceeds go to a great cause.

“A good portion of the money goes to missions and then some other projects that we might have,” Masters said.

Along with the apple pies, the group also made 200 cherry pies. However, the cherry pies have all been sold, Masters said.

People purchase the pies for a number of reasons including Christmas gifts or just to have for a dessert item.

The pies are starting to sell, Masters added.

“They are going, if the past is a history, they will be gone the middle of October,” she said.
