The senior cast of Silver Follies spent the last week rehearsing their annual music and comedy show.
This year, the group has a travel theme: trains in part I and planes in part II.
“They always do a variety show,” said director Drew Fethers.
Oldies and Bluegrass music influence the themes. This year’s performance includes a little local history with a riff on Bonnie and Clyde.
“They’re packed every year,” Fethers said, “It’s awesome.”
In addition to a night of visual and verbal gags, cast members say working on the project – which starts at the beginning of the year for the writing team – has given them new friendships.
Linda Rasmussen had to call first year performer Janice Reed repeatedly to get her to come out.
“There’s a lot of really nice, nice people out here and they’re really talented,” Reed said.
Her favorite skit is the “Dancing Grannies.” She said she enjoys cutting up and getting people to laugh with her.
Lucy Christian said she had fun last year and it gives her a chance to meet people she wouldn’t otherwise get to talk to.
“It’s nice to get acquainted with new people,” Christian said.
Bill Porter has several favorite skits: “Submerge Yourself” where he gets the chance to cry and be funny; “Doctor in the House,” which he describes as hilarious; and “Uncle Harvey’s Airplane.”
“It’s cute,” Porter said.
Preparation for the show has been time consuming, Porter said, but well worth it.
“It’s gonna be funny,” he said.
“Time Travels Home” will have three showings at the Elsie Plaster Auditorium at Crowder College: 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 16 and 17 and 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 18. General admission is $4. Proceeds from the Sunday show will help in Joplin tornado relief.
Silver Follies cast members include: Ruth E. Arnall, Audrey Boyer, Don Boyer, Lucy Christian, Mary Lee England, Kay Golden, Ray Golden, Allan Hardin, Anne Hardin, Goldie Hatfield, Dick Keezer, Pat Lett, Karol Mayer, Sherry Perkins, Bill Porter, Linda Rasmussen, Janice Reed, Barbara Shankles, Bernadine Sprenkle, Bea Watson and Clyde Whitehead.
