When the McDonald County girls basketball team can put together a performance like the one they did on Tuesday morning, they are a team to be reckoned with.
Kenzie Dill scored 23 points and the Lady Mustangs’ defense stifled Waynesville from start to finish in a 47-33 win in the first round of the Neosho Holiday Classic.
Waynesville started the game on an 8-3 run. But after a timeout for McDonald County, the Mustangs answered back with an 8-0 run and never trailed again.
Dill sank five 3-pointers in the win for McDonald County, which improved to 2-4 on the year. Freshman forward Preslea Reece added 12 points to go along with Dill on offense.
“Early on we wanted to go inside first and I think that we did a better job of that and got better looks,” McDonald County coach LaDonna McClain said. “We have been struggling with knowing when to hit what and when.”
Defensively, McDonald County forced several turnovers throughout the game that led to a number of fast break opportunities and kept the Lady Tigers from finding a rhythm on offense.
Niki House led Waynesville with 16 points in the loss.
Other scorers for McDonald County were Sarah Rickman with six and Ashton Pratt, Darian Stancell and Taylor Pearcy with two apiece.
Despite the big win, McClain still saw some areas that needed improvement.
“We didn’t do a good job on the boards at all,” McClain said. “The reason they were in it for as long as they were was because they had way too many second chance opportunities.”
The Lady Mustangs will next take on Rogers-Heritage. The Lady War Eagles defeated McDonald County in Anderson just a few weeks ago. That game is at 8:30 p.m.
Waynesville will face East Newton at 9 a.m. in the loser’s bracket.
