A sizeable crowd was seen on Friday night during East Newton’s Young Farmer’s all you can eat barbecue pork dinner and work auction.

The money raised during the dinner went to fund scholarships for qualifying graduating seniors. The work auction proceeds went to fund FFA projects during the year such as competitions.

“We had about the same number of people we fed as we did a year ago,” said John Littlefield, FFA adviser. “The work auction seemed to do really, really well.”

Littlefield estimated the totals at around 300 people fed with between $2,500-$2,600 raised. For the work auction, Littlefield estimated around $3,000 was raised.

One of the seniors who helped serve the dinner and who is hoping for a scholarship was Kacia Renner.

“It will help me pay for my college,” said Renner, who plans on attending Crowder College and majoring in agricultural business or general studies.

Mackenzie Lowe, also a senior, said the scholarship would help him as well.

“It would help me with getting back and forth from college,” he said.

East Newton sophomore FFA student Lindsay Sreaves was enjoying her barbecue pork dinner prior to the work auction.

“At first, I didn’t know if I wanted to be in FFA, because I thought that it was only for people who owned farm animals, people who lived on a farm,” Sreaves said. “But when I joined, I found out that it was for people like me who really don’t live on a farm, so you don’t have to be a farmer to be in it.”

She said she is pleased the public came out to support the FFA department.

“It makes me feel good that people gives us money, that they support us and they want to see us go on to college,” Sreaves said.
