After McAuley’s first drive stalled at the start of the game, Diamond started running. Then, they didn’t stop running until they left Fred G. Hughes Stadium with a big, 34-6 win over the Warriors in Class 2 District 7 play.

The win kept Diamond’s playoff hopes afloat as high school football goes into week 10.

If Diamond can pull off the upset of Lamar on Thursday or if McAuley can beat Sarcoxie, Diamond will have a chance to earn the second playoff spot out of the district.

Sophomore running back Zach Renfro had yet another monster game for the Wildcats. Renfro finished the night with 179 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries. He surpassed 1,000 yards for the season with the win Friday.

With about seven minutes to play in the first quarter, Renfro got into the end zone from 11 yards out to open up the scoring. After both teams traded interceptions — this makes nine games in a row that Diamond has picked off a pass — Renfro scored again on a four-yard run to make it 13-0 late in the second quarter.

Diamond took the ball to start the third quarter and Renfro went back to work. The Wildcats went on a six-minute drive and scored again on a one-yard keeper by quarterback Brodie Bien to make it 19-0.

McAuley’s Cole Lowry ran back the ensuing kickoff for the Warriors’ only score of the game. The extra point was blocked.

Diamond picked off a pair of other passes before the night was over and Jarren Reinhart found his way into the endzone in what could be his last Friday game.

Bien and Reinhart finished with 85 yards and 68 yards rushing, respectively, to go along with their touchdowns. As a team, Diamond ran for 386 yards on the night. That was the gameplan going into the game against a proficient passing attack in McAuley and the Wildcats executed it to perfection, dominating time of possession.

On defense, Caleb Elder and Caleb James each had a sack for the Wildcats and Reinhart paced Diamond with nine tackles. James leads the area with seven sacks on the year.

Thursday, Diamond travels to Lamar while McAuley hosts Sarcoxie. Lamar is already guaranteed a playoff spot after beating McAuley, 71-6 and topping Sarcoxie, 55-0.

Diamond and Sarcoxie are both 1-1 in district play and, with how the rules work, they are both at +/- 0 after two games. If Sarcoxie loses by more than 13 points and Diamond loses by less than 13, the Wildcats would get into the playoffs.
