DIAMOND – Unfortunately for the Diamond Wildcats, the streak continues.
The Sarcoxie Bears extended their eight-year winning streak over Diamond with a 48-25 win Friday night at Diamond High School.
The Bears capitalized on a number of Wildcat mistakes and held Diamond’s leading rusher, Zach Renfro, to just 77 yards and no touchdowns. The Wildats got 78 yards rushing and a touchdown from Jarren Reinhart in the loss.
Tyler Horton ran for 52 yards and a score for Diamond. He also completed 3-of-4 passes for 61 yards and another score. Sadly, the senior left the game with a leg injury and the initial prognosis is that his season may be over.
Brodie Bien came in at quarterback and went 4-for-10 for 63 yards after Horton went down. Bien also ran for 18 yards and a score.
“Brodie played well for us,” Diamond coach Aaron Davied said. “He ran the veer effectively and protected the football for us. He stepped up tonight.”
Jordan Divine led Diamond with two catches for 30 yards. Clayton Rolf had an 18-yard receiving touchdown. Renfro, Bien, Reinhart and Jake Goade each had one reception for Diamond.
The Wildcats actually went toe-to-toe with Sarcoxie as far as total offense is concerned. Diamond gained 345 total yards compared to 357 yards of total offense by Sarcoxie.
“We played well on offense,” Davied said. “I was upset with our play on defense and special teams. Poor tackling hurt us and against a team like Sarcoxie, you can’t have poor tackling. Our special teams were sloppy. We blocked our own punt and we let (Sarcoxie) run a kickoff back for a touchdown.”
The kickoff return was the backbreaker for Diamond. The Wildcats had just scored to get within one possession and Davied dialed up an onside kick. The kicker didn’t execute the kick correctly and the Bears’ main return man was able to scoop the ball up and take it to the house.
The streak also continued in a good way for Diamond. The Wildcats made it eight games in a row with an interception to start the season. Evan Moreland was the defender who did the honors this week. Jordan Douglas and Dylan Welch led the Wildcats with 12 tackles each.
Friday, Diamond continues district play with a road contest against McAuley. Last week, the Warriors were trounced by Lamar, 71-6. The Lamar Tigers scored a state record 57 first quarter points in the win.
“We feel good offensively going into this game,” Davied said. “(McAuley’s) passing attack scares us a little bit. Especially with Tyler Horton being out at the safety spot. They will score some points, but we just have to hold on to the football with our running game and control the tempo.”
