The East Newton Patriots fell to the Strafford Indians by a score of 21-14, in a heartbreaking loss Friday night at Don Johnston Stadium.

In a penalty-filled game, the Patriots had two touchdowns called back and lost yardage on some critical plays.
“I’m very disappointed, we should have won this game,” East Newton coach Bobby Bishop said. “I feel like we’re snake bit. Our guys worked so hard this week and played so hard tonight, they never quit or backed off. I’m proud of them.”

The Indians received the kickoff, moved down the field and struck first on a three-yard run by James Grass. The drive chewed up five minutes of the first quarter. Kicker Colton Learmy kicked the extra point to give Strafford a 7-0 lead with 6:54 to play in the first quarter.

East Newton’s Tanner Weinhold picked up 28 yards on the kickoff return.

The Patriots drove down the field and scored on a Rocky Liveoak to Jaron McCully eight-yard pass. The extra point failed and the Indians still held the lead, 7-6.

The Patriots defense dug in and held the Indians scoreless through the first half. The linebackers played well, especially Ammon Allphin. In the first and second quarter, the entire defense began to control the field.

East Newton took possession of ball after the half and a one-yard score with 6:10 on the clock by Liveoak.

Liveoak then connected with Paxton Hill for a two-point conversion. East Newton led 14-7.  During this series, East Newton had a touchdown play called back when Liveoak connected with John Hansen for a 59-yard touchdown pass. A Patriot fumble was picked up by the Indians’ Jacob Shoemaker, who scurried 42-yards for a touchdown with 30.7 seconds left in the third. Strafford attempted a two-point conversion and failed with an incomplete pass to make the score 14-13, Patriots.

The Patriots and Indians traded the ball, until a pass from the Indians’ Jacob Wade was tipped by Trevor Sayre to his teammate Baxter Milsap, who made it to the East Newton three-yard line before being clawed down. Grass scored and Wade connected with Kory Noe for a two-point conversion, to give Strafford a 21-14 lead.

The Patriots’ Weinhold picked up 40 yards on the return and the team headed for the goal line. With 46.4 seconds left, Liveoak connected with Hansen for the second touchdown, that was called back on a penalty, an illegal shift.

The Patriots could not score and, ultimately, turned the ball over on downs.

“We’re headed in the right direction,” Bishop said after the loss. “Our kids won’t quit and our coaches are not going to quit. And next week we’ll take a shot at Nevada.”

East Newton will face the Nevada Tigers in Granby Friday at 7 p.m.
