The East Newton Patriots lost their football Homecoming Game to the Nevada Tigers, 22-17.
The Friday night contest was a sloppy to say the least. Between the two teams there were 14 fumbles lost, three interceptions and two bad snaps.
“It seemed like it was two teams trying real hard to win and not knowing how,” East Newton coach Bobby Bishop said.
East Newton struck early in the first quarter when Jaron McCully broke free for a 51-yard run, to score with 9:53 on the clock. Colby Thomas’s PAT was good.
The Tigers got the ball on the East Newton 15-yard line due to bad snap to Rocky Liveoak, during a punt attempt. On this possession Johnathan Klingaman scored with 5:03 left on the clock. The Tigers, who have not attempted a field goal or PAT yet this season, failed on a two point conversion and the Patriots led, 7-6. During the first quarter there were four fumbles and one bad snap.
Early in the second quarter, the Tigers’ Nathan Slichenmyer intercepted a pass and ran 50 yards for a touchdown, only to have it called back on an illegal block. After a couple of more fumbles and a high snap by the Tigers center, East Newton ended up with the ball on the Nevada 32-yard line.
With 1:01 left in the half, McCully found the end zone after a six yard run and Thomas followed with a PAT to open up an eight-point East Newton lead.
Nevada fumbled a few plays later and the Patriots’ Drew Williams recovered.
Running out of time, East Newton’s field goal unit entered the game with 46.2 second on the clock. Thomas split the uprights with a 38 yard field goal, putting the Patriots on top, 17-6. There were four fumbles, an interception and one bad snap in the second quarter.
East Newton spent most of the third quarter on defense. The critical play for the quarter was an interception by Nevada’s Keegan Bell, who picked up 65 yards on the run before McCully caught him on the East Newton five-yard line. An illegal block pulled the ball back to the East Newton 43-yard line but the Tigers went on a time-grinding series that ended with a touchdown and a two-point conversion with 3:52 on the clock. The score cut the Patriots’ lead to 17-14.
The Tigers Trevor Hunholz scored early in the fourth quarter on a three-yard run. Quarterback Alex Payne crossed the goal line for a two-point conversion and Nevada took a 22-17 lead. The Patriots got the ball back with 9:51 left in the quarter and churned their way toward the Nevada goal line. With 18.2 seconds left in the game, Nevada’s Cole Sanderson intercepted a pass in his own end zone and downed the ball, ending East Newton’s chance of picking up its first win of the season.
Next Friday night, the Patriots will face the Carl Junction Bulldogs in Granby at 7 p.m.
