The Springfield Catholic Fightin’ Irish defeated the East Newton Patriots 51-15, Friday night, at Swisshelm Field in Springfield.
“I’m proud of our kids. They played hard the first half and into the third quarter.” East Newton coach Bobby Bishop said. “Springfield (Catholic) is a good football team. They’re ranked 5th in the pre-season. We played tough, but two turnovers hurt and we have to work on tackling.”
East Newton received the kickoff, went nowhere and punted. Catholic’s Josh Knox returned the punt 61 yards for the first score with 9:44 left in the first quarter.
Nick Gori scored the PAT and the Irish led 7-0. East Newton’s Paxton Hill picked up 24 yards on the kickoff and was only prevented from scoring by the kicker. Both teams moved back and forth on the field until the Patriots’ Rocky Liveoak picked off a Chad McBride pass.
East Newton pushed the ball down field on the legs of Jaron McCully and Ammon Allphin. Allphin picked up the last two yards for a touchdown. McCully kept the snap from the center on the PAT and sprinted to the corner for 2 points, with 40 seconds left in the quarter. The quarter ended 8-7, with East Newton in the lead.
In the second quarter, Springfield Catholic scored with 9:11 on the clock, but failed to get a two-point conversion for a 13-8 lead.
East Newton moved the ball but gave up an interception which let another Irish score to give them a 20-8 lead.
East Newton struck next with a 48-yard pass from Liveoak to McCully for a touchdown. Freshman Colby Thomas’ extra point attempt was good. That score cut the deficit down to five at 20-15.
The Irish scored one last time in the half with 4 seconds on the clock and the half ended with the Irish on top, 27-15.
Springfield Catholic’s Cameron Skornia returned the second half kickoff 65 yards to score with only 14 seconds off the clock. The Irish would score two more times in the quarter, but this was not a one sided affair. The Patriots’ McCully racked up 89 yards running and 17 yards receiving in the quarter. In one series, East Newton pushed the Irish into the red zone and came up short, as Bishop went for it on fourth down and failed.
East Newton spent most of the fourth quarter on defense, as the Irish chewed up the clock and scored the last touchdown of the game with 2:57 left on the clock, (51-15) Springfield. Patriots Ross Nagle picked up 10 yards on the return and the East Newton got back to work. John Hansen, who had done yeoman’s work on defense all night, snagged a Liveoak pass for a nice 32 yard pickup.
But time was the Patriots enemy and the clock hit zero before they could find the end zone again.
Next week, East Newton will be at Don Johnston Stadium to face the Strafford Indians.
