The East Newton Patriots traveled just a few minutes from the vacation capitol of the Midwest to Hollister for their jamboree on Friday night.
They opened the night by scrimmaging against the host school. The Patriots had some success moving the football, but couldn’t punch it into the end zone.
East Newton also played well on defense, allowing only one score by Hollister.
“We played pretty well, we started out strong,” East Newton head coach Bobby Bishop said. “They scored one touchdown against us, but I don’t think we scored against them.”
Rocky Liveoak threw a pass into the end zone on the Patriots’ last play against Hollister and it found John Hansen. However, the senior tight end couldn’t hold on for the catch and East Newton was held scoreless against Hollister.
“We ran the ball pretty well,” Bishop said of his offense. “Our offensive line did a good job and we were able to move the ball.”
The coach was very pleased with his team’s effort on defense.
“Early on, Ian Plemmons looked really good at linebacker for us. On the defensive line, Marcus
Mahaffey (played well),” Bishop said. “Marcus is new to football and he’s had a good camp so far. He was all over the field for us. Later on Jaron McCully stood out for us at cornerback as well.”
Next, East Newton took on Marionville. The scrimmage was competitive throughout, with each team scoring a single touchdown.
The Patriots closed out the jamboree with a scrimmage against Pleasant Hope. As with most teams, the junior varsity and freshmen players got a majority of the snaps in the final scrimmage.
“We did get some second team guys in there, especially on defense,” Bishop said. “We also put McCully at quarterback for a little different look there. We did try to get some of our upper level second team guys in there for some game action.”
For Bishop, the jamboree revealed a single area in serious need of improvement on both sides of the football.
“We need to do a whole lot better job of tackling in space defensively,” Bishop said. “We have to shore up our pass coverage a little bit as well. On offense we still need to work on our passing. We are not carrying out our fakes and our timing could be better in the passing game.”
The Patriots’ coach also said that conditioning was a bit of a concern at this point.
“There is a lot of work to do yet,” Bishop said.
