The East Newton Patriots ran into a buzz saw Friday night in Aurora.
The Houn’ Dawgs got 336 yards rushing, 252 of them from star running back Everett Basham and topped East Newton 41-7.
In the first quarter, the Patriots played Aurora tough. After one quarter the score was just 7-0 in favor of Aurora.
After a big, 60-yard touchdown run by Basham in the second quarter, it looked like Aurora had taken momentum. But Amon Allphin had other ideas. The senior broke through the line on a punt and blocked the kick. He then scooped the ball up and ran it in for a touchdown to make the score 14-7.
It looked like East Newton would go into the locker room with just a one score deficit. But the multi-talented Aurora offense struck again right before the half was up.
Houn’ Dawg quarterback Clayton Sumners hooked up with Andrew Parker for a 27-yard score to give Aurora a 21-7 lead at the half.
“Early on we had some calls go against us and that got us a little riled up,” East Newton coach Bobby Bishop said. “Amon blocked that punt to get us back into the game a little bit. But, the turning point was the touchdown pass right before halftime.”
In the second half, it was all Houn’ Dawgs. The home team got three, unanswered rushing touchdowns in the third quarter, all by Basham.
After that, Aurora coasted to the win.
“Amon Allphin ran hard for us. Jaron McCully showed a lot of toughness playing with a sore shoulder,” Bishop said.
“Codey Jordon played well for us on defense as well.”
East Newton, now 0-5, will entertain Mount Vernon on Friday.
“I know they’re struggling like us,” Bishop said. “There will be a lot of pride at stake with two teams looking for their first win on the field. It should be a very competitive game.”
