The East Newton Patriots lost a heartbreaker Friday night to the Mount Vernon Mountaineers in overtime.
The teams entered overtime play tied at 8-8.
After the first series, the Patriots had picked up six more points and the Mountaineers collected eight to give themselves the 16-14 win.
“We were able to move the ball, but we stalled out in the red zone two or three times,” East Newton coach Bobby Bishop said.
The Patriots were without starting quarterback Rocky Liveoak who missed the game with a leg injury.
“We made the call right before the game. We gave the leg as much time as possible to let the swelling go down,” Bishop said of the injury. “Our trainer checked him out tonight and we decided not to play him. He’ll be going to a doctor this week for a further evaluation.”
During the first quarter, the two teams moved the ball on the field without much success.
Mt. Vernon did block a punt and ended up with good field position. But the Patriots defense held them in check.
Jaron McCully, who moved from running back to quarterback, filling in for the injured Liveoak, showed his arm was a viable weapon when he connected with John Hansen for a 28-yard gain.
The only turnover in the night came in the second quarter when East Newton’s Paxton Hill tipped a pass from McCully, into the hands of Mt. Vernon defensive back Denton Thomas. The Patriots then put three running backs on the field: Ammon Allphin, Tanner Weinhold, Ian Plemmons and began faking hand-offs to each.
All three racked up good yardage during the night and the Mountaineer’s struggled to keep track of who had the ball.
The Mountaineers’ Hunter Brown picked up 79 yards to start the third quarter. With 10:28 on the clock Mt. Vernon’s Alex Hausman scrambled 10 yards to score. Kyler Shoff crossed the goal line for a two-point conversion and the Mountaineer’s led 8-0.
East Newton received a punt with 9:14 left in the fourth quarter. The Patriots chewed up the clock until McCully laid a pass in the hands of Hansen, who scurried into the end zone with only 59.8 seconds left. East Newton went for the two point conversion to tie the game. The Patriots’ Plemmons clamped onto a McCully pass and collected the two points they needed to take the game into overtime.
In overtime East Newton got the ball first and started on the 25-yard line, heading for the end zone. This series had it all. They picked up five yards on a Mt. Vernon penalty, they were sacked for a nine yard loss and at one point were staring at a 3rd down and 18 yards to go situation, and pulled it off. Finally, from the three-yard line, Allphin powered his way across the goal line for the touchdown. The PAT was unsuccessful, East Newton led, 14-8.
The Mountaineers Shane Williams then ran four times in a row picking up yardage and a new set of downs. Hausman, who hadn’t completed a pass since the first quarter, dropped one into the hands of Auston Weldy for a touchdown. Devin Morris got the call and made it across the goal line for Mt. Vernon’s winning score. The Mountaineers won 16-14.
The Patriots will travel to Lamar next week to face the much improved Tigers.
