The McDonald County Mustangs went into Friday night’s game against the Gravette Lions shorthanded. Their starting backfield – running back Jansten Lynn and fullback Travis Meador – sat out the game due to injuries received last week.

As a result, the Mustangs were outgunned in a 49-7 loss to the Lions.

McDonald County managed only 38 yards and two first downs in the first half. The Mustangs lost three first half fumbles and fell behind 24-0 at halftime against a Gravette offense loaded with weapons, keyed by senior quarterback Clayton Alexander.

Alexander hit on 15 of 20 passes for 191 yards and four touchdowns – three in the first half – to direct a balanced Lion offense. He connected with seven different receivers, and got plenty of help from standout running back Darrick Strzelecki, who rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

The Lions, 2-0, scored on their third possession of the game, marching 61 yards in five plays. Alexander’s first touchdown pass covered 10 yards to Darrick Strzelecki at the 4:34 mark of the first quarter.

They went up 12-0 on a 10-yard scoring strike from Alexander to Adam Roberts at the 10:06 mark of the second quarter. The score was set up by a 47-yard fumble return to the Mustang 15 yard line.

Strzelecki made it 18-0 on a 2-yard run at the 4:38 mark of the second quarter. Alexander’s third TD pass was a 45-yard strike to Tyler Grenshaw at the 2:38 mark of the second quarter.

The only part of the Lion offense that didn’t operate to perfection was its kicking game. Gravette scored eight touchdowns in the game, but failed on seven extra point tries.

Juniors Josh Serr and Chad Roark filled in for the missing Mustang backfield, and found some running room, but were not able to sustain drives. Serr led McDonald County with 39 yards on 8 carries. Roark finished with 26 yards on 15 carries.

Quarterback Cody Hobbs hit on only two of 14 passes for 43 yards – both receptions to Chance Buttram.

The Mustangs fell to 0-3 on the year.
