The McDonald County football team’s jamboree was just across town from Neosho. The Mustangs ventured to Kickapoo High School to take on the Kickapoo Chiefs, Branson and Aurora.

McDonald County got their first shot at a different colored jersey against Kickapoo. Offensively, McDonald County head coach Chris Gwartney was happy with what he saw from his team.

“We felt like we did pretty well (against Kickapoo),” Gwartney said. “We were able to move the ball on offense and do some thingst that we wanted to do. “

Chance Buttram made a number of good plays catching the football and Jantsen Lynn ran the ball with some success for McDonald County against the Chiefs.

“Defensively, we didn’t do as well as we would have liked,” Gwartney said.

After their scrimmage with Kickapoo, McDonald County took on the Branson Pirates and star running back Malachi Andrews. After a poor showing from the defense against Kickapoo, the Mustangs tightened up against the Pirates.

“We did pretty well (defensively) against Branson,”Gwartney said. “(Branson running back Malachi Andrews) broke a big run against us early. But Branson is a big, physical team and I felt like we did a much better job being physical against them than we were with Kickapoo. That’s good because if we hadn’t been physical with them, Branson would have taken us apart.”

Zack Peck came up with interception from his cornerback position in the scrimmage and continues to impress coaches going into the regular season. Peck is one of several new starters on an inexperienced Mustang defense.

“We did a little better job against Branson and I was happy with how well our linebackers played (in that scrimmage).” Gwartney said.

Finally, McDonald County faced off with the Aurora Houn’ Dawgs. Like in just about every other jamboree, the Mustangs and Dawgs gave a solid amount of playing time to the junior varsity in the final scrimmage.

“We played quite a few of our younger guys against Aurora,” Gwartney said. “The thing about our young kids that pleased me was that they were a little better on offense than I thought we would be.”

The Mustangs’ coach seemed content with his team’s performance in their final tune up before opening the season at Monett. There are still a few things that he would like to see corrected before next Friday.

“We just made way too many mistakes on both sides of the ball. We missed blocking assignments on offense and didn’t get off blocks defensively,” Gwartney said. “The main thing for us is we want to be a little more aggressive.”
