A championship culture.

That’s the mission of new Seneca head football coach Dan Scheible. On Sunday, Scheible addressed his team for the first time since being hired at the end of May. Throughout the meeting, Scheible described what a championship culture is.

“A championship culture is just all of the things you should do on a daily basis,” Scheible explained. “When you get up, when you get dressed, you get dressed appropriately. When it’s time for class, you show up to class. When it’s time for practice, you show up to practice ready to go. All of those things that you do on a daily basis, you do the best you possibly can in everything that you do. Because, in a championship culture, there is no time where you are on or you’re off, you are on all the time. Once you establish that championship culture, the games and the wins and losses just take care of themselves.”

Scheible comes to Seneca with 31 years of coaching experience, including 23 years in the college ranks.

The search for the Indians’ new football coach began at the conclusion of the 2010 season after former coach Rob Townsend announced his resignation. Seneca finished last season 8-3 and was ousted in the first round of the state playoffs in Holden with a 28-14 loss.

Scheible was chosen after five interviews were conducted.

“I knew about the job quite a while back and didn’t apply right away,” Scheible said. “But I applied later on — and this all came about in the last few weeks — I applied for the job and came down for an interview. I interviewed for the job the day before the tornado. They called me back a few days later, then they had the board meeting and voted on me and now I’m here.”

Defensively, Seneca fans can expect to see an aggressive defense out of the Indians this fall.

“We’ll be an odd-front defensive team, either a 4-2 or 4-3 defense,” Scheible said. “It will depend on the number of linebackers that we have. I would prefer that we run a 4-2 because you can blitz off the edges more and you can adjust to three, four and five wide receiver sets so much easier since you have just two inside linebackers and five (defensive backs). Coach (Chris) Yust is going to run our defense.”

Scheible even surrendered some insight into his weekly defensive game plan.

“If it’s a critical situation in the game, we’re going to come after you,” he said.

Fans of the Seneca running game won’t have to sacrifice anything with the new system. Scheible said that he plans to run a two-back (primarily I-formation) offense with a few one back wrinkles.

“We could be in a one back set but we’ll have at least one, usually two tight ends in the game all the time. Even when we’re in that one back set we’ll probably have at least one tight end in the game.” Scheible said. “We’re going to run inside zone, outside zone and we’re going to run two back power sets in the two back game.”

The last few weeks have moved quickly for the new Seneca taskmaster. And since it has only been such a short time, it is impossible to tell how excited fans are to have their coaching questions answered.

One thing is for sure, Scheible couldn’t be happier to be in Seneca.

“I am very excited about being the head coach. I think we can do great things,” Scheible said. “I think that you have to learn to do things right and establish that championship culture. If you do that, the wins and losses take care of itself. I think that there is something that you can always do better whether it’s in the hallways, in the practices or in games we want to do it better.”
