The All-Big 8 Conference football teams were released Wednesday, and five Seneca Indians were named to the offensive first team, and four were named to the defensive first team.
Seneca quarter-back Jacob Rhoades and running back Allen Frost were named Co-Offensive Player of the Year for the Big 8 Conference by the coaches.
Frost led the team in scoring with 25 touchdowns and one 2-point conversion for 152 points. He rushed for 1,314 yards on 198 carries. Frost was a unanimous selection.
Rhoades was also a force on the ground and through the air. Rhoades gained 902 yards rushing on 126 carries, and also threw for 894 yards and eight touchdowns. He completed 71 of 102 pass attempts. He rushed for eight touchdowns. Joining Frost and Rhoades as All-Big 8 Conference first-team offensive selections were Seneca teammates Steve Adams, senior tackle, Jacoby Hymer, senior guard, and Eric Esposito, senior wide receiver. Esposito finished the regular season with 465 yards on 35 catches and four receiving touchdowns.
The Indians were also well-represented on the defensive side of the ball on the All-Conference first team.
Marcus Carruthers earned a first-team selection as a senior defensive end. Carruthers led the Indians in sacks with five. Also named to the defensive first team from Seneca were Hymer, a senior defensive tackle, Dalton Lindsey, junior linebacker, Esposito, a senior defensive back. Hymer finished with three sacks on the season.
Seneca head coach Rob Townsend was named Big 8 Conference Coach of the Year.
Bradley Leitch, a senior center, earned second-team All-Big 8 Conference offensive honors for Seneca along with teammate Thadeus Foley, a junior kicker. On the second-team defensive squad, Seneca’s Hank Whitehead, a senior linebacker, earned a spot. East Newton’s junior tackle John Hansen also received an honor. Local honorable mention selection for Seneca was Tim Harnar, defensive back. East Newton’s Jaron McCully, a junior wide receiver, was named to the all-conference honorable mention offensive team along with running back Ammon Allphin, while Will Wheeler was named to the defensive honorable mention team as a defensive back.
