The Seneca Indians defeated the East Newton Patriots, 41-17 Friday night in Granby.

The contest was a showcase of two excellent running backs as East Newton’s Jaron McCully picked up over 200 total yards and Seneca’s Marty Mailes surpassed the 300-yard mark. Even with the ground game taking center stage,

Seneca scored twice through the air and East Newton’s freshman kicker Colby Thomas split the uprights for a 35-yard field goal.

Seneca kicked off to start the game and the ball went out of bounds. The Patriots chose to have a re-kick and the Patriots’ Brandon White, picked up five yards on the replay to start the game.

East Newton quarterback Rocky Liveoak fumbled the ball on the second play and the Indians’ Trevor Sill grabbed it and ran. The Patriots forced Sill to fumble on the same play and Seneca’s Lucky Eads lived up to his name. Eads got to the ball first, ending the play.

Seneca scored as a result of that turnover and would later pick up its third touchdown in the first quarter on a Patriots fumble.

“We were not in the game in the first half,” Seneca coach Dan Scheible said. “Halftime was all about effort and concentration; there were no X’s & O’s.”

The Patriots’ Caleb Jarnagin had an outstanding reception as he was being crushed by a Seneca defender. His catch set up a Patriots first quarter touchdown, as McCully picked up four yards for a score. The first quarter ended with Seneca leading, 21-7.

East Newton controlled the second quarter, scoring 10 unanswered points. McCully picked up a 16-yard touchdown and Thomas kicked his long field goal.
Seneca picked up yardage but could never find the end zone. Late in the half Seneca was threatening to score, until Payton Rawlins was picked off by McCully, near the East Newton goal line.

McCully wove his way 88 yards after the interception before he went down. At the half, Seneca led 21-17.

“We played a good first half,” East Newton coach Bobby Bishop said. “Our blocking was good in the first half, but our tackling fell off in the second half and we made some mistakes in the second half. We just can’t seem to put together a full game.”

The third quarter was quiet and fast, there were only five possessions in the twelve minutes. The only action came when Seneca picked up its fourth touchdown on a three-yard run by Mailes.

Seneca dominated the fourth quarter.

They scored 13 unanswered points, as Rawlins scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper and connected with Kyler Ng for a 28-yard catch and run.
This made the final score 41-17, allowing Seneca to pick up its fifth win.

Early in the game, Seneca’s Jalen Skaggs, who has picked up ten touchdowns thus far this season, was injured and never returned to the game

Next week Seneca will face the Monett Cubs at home and East Newton will travel to Cassville to tangle with the Wildcats.
