Tuesday will be the last day to file for office in Newton County, as well as statewide, for persons affiliated with the two major political parties.

Independents and candidates belonging to new parties have until July 28.

 As of press time Monday, candidates who have tossed their hat in the ring for the August 5 primary election include:

To file for county office, prospective candidates need to bring an ID, proof of paid taxes by the state department of revenue, and a $50 check or money order (filing fee) to the Newton County Clerks’ Office in the county courthouse before 5 p.m. Tuesday.

To file for state office, prospective candidates must file in person at the James C.
Kirkpatrick State Information Center, 600 West Main, Jefferson City before 5 p.m. Tuesday. There is a $50 fee to file for state representative or state senator.

Independents and members of new parties have until July 28 to file.
