Approximately 400 people and 15 churches came together for a real-life object lesson.

BJ Jordan, of CrossRoads Horse Ministry, walked a 3-year-old filly through acceptance to submission – illustrating the horse’s reactions with scripture.

Jordan started off his “illustrated” sermon by introducing the horse.

“She’s going to write the sermon for tonight,” Jordan said

He didn’t carry a Bible or a pocketful of notes, but Jordan talked from his heart and to the horse. The colt was halter trained, but he took his time working into touching her and slipping on the halter.

He told the audience how cowboys used to break their horses by taking them to a post, outfitting them with gear and riding them into submission.

“They threw a saddle on them and rode the hair off of ‘em,” Jordan said.

He prefers a gentler approach, letting the horse do some of the work by coming to him.

Before the sermon, children and parents wandered the grounds at Calvary Baptist where the event was held. They visited the petting zoo and took horseback rides. There was watermelon, popcorn, hot dogs and plenty of soft drinks and bottled water.

Jordan was raised in the Neosho area. This was the first event of the year for the CrossRoads ministry.

Organizer Larry Dowell called the event a tremendous success. He credits the many hands and teamwork across the area with bringing everything together.

“I just want to say thanks to all the area churches for their attendance and support,” Dowell said.

He hopes to make it an annual event.

Area churches helped sponsor the event including: Calvary of Neosho, Fellowship Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Neosho, First Baptist Diamond, Joplin Greenwood Baptist, Jones Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, Newtonia Baptist Church, PromiseLand Fellowship (Granby), Ritchey Baptist Church, Stella Baptist Church, Stella United Methodist Church, Splitlog Baptist Church and United Methodist Church
