More than 20 children had the opportunity to see how pioneers lived and played during the 2009 Pioneer Camp held Saturday at the Newton County Historical Park.

“It is something for the community that the historical society wanted to do for kids as a free event,” said Wes Franklin, director of the historical park and museum. “This gives them something to do in the dog days of summer.”

Children up to the age of 12 had the hands-on opportunity to grind wheat to make bread, churn butter for the homemade bread and even play pioneer games.

The event was held under the pavilion at the park.
