Organizers with Granby’s Old Mining Town Days are putting the finishing touches on the annual event, slated for this Friday through Sunday.

“This is our 26th year for having it,” noted Patti Farmer, chairperson of the event. “The main purpose is for people to get together and have a good time. A lot of people come in for family reunions, and they meet at the park.”

The three-day event will mostly be held at Dick Smith Park, with the exception of the Old Timers Ballgame (held at the ball field), the all-school reunion (held at the school), parade (held on Main Street) and the car show (held at the ball field).

The event has something for everyone from music to food to arts and crafts booths to a carnival. A fireworks display will cap off the event Sunday.

Friday includes the ceremony which will name the honored citizen, followed by music.

“We do our honored citizen on Friday so that they can ride in the parade (on Saturday),” Farmer said. “They get a proclamation that says what they do is so wonderful.”

This year, between eight and 10 people were nominated for the honored citizen.

Qualifications for the nomination include the person has to be a resident of the town or had gone to school there. Plus, they have to do something for the town.

“It is a vote situation, we put buckets and ballots out all over and people will vote for whom they
think should win,” she said.

The honored citizen will be named at 6:15 p.m., Friday.

Saturday’s events will officially kick off at 7 a.m.

“They start out with the Granby Lions Club 5K Run and Pancake Feed at 7 a.m.,” Farmer said. “Then we have a car show that goes on from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and later the parade at 3 p.m. We hope to have a lot of parade participants, anyone that wants to come and line up.”

At Dick Smith Park, there the Boy Scouts will have a dunk tank. The Newton County Sheriff’s Department will do children’s fingerprinting and identification.

“We are going to have some (arts and crafts booths) and we are going to have a produce market in the park,” said Farmer. “We also have several food vendors (during the event).”

Sunday’s events include the Old Timers Ballgame at 2 p.m. at the Granby Ball field. Coming back to the Dick Smith Park at 5 p.m., spectators will hear more music – including the National Anthem and music provided by the Ministerial Alliance. Capping off the event is a huge fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.

“We get a pretty good crowd, especially a good crowd on Sunday because nobody really is shooting fireworks on Sunday this year,” Farmer said.

During the three-day event, a “pass-the-hat” will be performed, where all of the money raised will go back to the OMTD committee for expenses.

“The proceeds go toward paying the bands and the fireworks,” said Farmer.
