Many people go to college unsure what they want to spend their life doing. Logan Kennedy, recent East Newton graduate, definitely has his mind made up when he heads to Ft. Scott Community College this fall.
“Everything is just ‘ag’ in his eyes,” said his mother, Leslie Kennedy.
The Logan family are longtime attendees at the Newton County Fair, with several wins in animal showmanship under their belt. This year, Logan won grand champion steer and the reserve champion hog.
On Thursday afternoon, Logan talked with the Neosho Daily News about some of his accomplishments.
Can you talk a bit about yourself?
My name’s Logan Kennedy and I graduated this year from East Newton High School, and I’m in FFA and 4-H…I show cattle, hogs and chickens at many fairs.
What kind of animals do you have at this year’s Newton County Fair?
I’ve just got crossbred steers, heifers and hogs and chickens.
How long have you been showing at the fair?
I’ve been showing since I was 8 years old.
Do you remember the first time you won?
No. (It was so long ago) I kind of remember, but not really.
Any other recognitions?
Outstanding 4-H Boy, I won that twice.
Where you involved in Ag a lot in high school?
Yeah, that was about it. I wasn’t really a sports player. Ag is my life, it’s what I do. That’s gonna get me further than chasin’ a pigskin around the football field.
Do you live on a farm?
Yes. My grandma and grandpa and my uncle, I help them a lot. They run about 250 head of cattle. Feed a lot of hay.
Just cattle?
Just cattle. We have show hogs and chickens, but we don’t raise poultry chickens. We just show ‘em and eat ‘em.
Can you talk a bit about your family?
My dad’s name is Jared Kennedy and my mom’s name is Leslie Kennedy. I have a little sister and she got reserve here this year with her steer and her name is Kendra Kennedy. And she had the grand champion prospect hog…
What’s next for you?
Next fair is Mac County. We’re going to have one heifer, one steer, probably two hogs. And then the next week, we’ll go to Springfield; it’s like our district fair. We’ll have three steers up there, chickens and two hogs. Hopefully, we do good.
As far as college goes, do you have any plans?
I got a judging scholarship to judge livestock at Ft. Scott Community College, and I’ll be going there in the fall.
