An event dedicated to helping to provide school supplies and other items for school children will be held this Saturday at Abundant Life Church, Neosho.
"This is our ninth year for the We Care Fair," Abundant Life Associate Pastor David Cox said. "The main purpose, is that we are trying to relieve some of the financial stress on families in our community and surrounding communities because this is open up to Newton and McDonald counties, the only requirement that we have for our guest that attend is that they live in one of those two counties. (It helps) relieve some of that financial stress that families have, especially with those who have multiple children or in hardship with their finances that, it takes a lot of money to get your kids back to school."
The free event is open to children from preschool to 12th graders. Even though preregistration is over, one can still attend the event which is held from 8 to 11 a.m.
"The preregistration guarantees their school supplies and their backpacks - which the school supplies are already loaded in the backpacks," he said. "So preregistration guarantees that. then they can go through all of the other lines where we offer shoes, coats or a hoodie, a pair of jeans, and then we also have all kinds of vendors that will be here, Scholastic has donated books, Access Family Care, and people doing haircuts."
Those who will attend are asked to park at the parking lot of the Newton County Health Department and shuttles will take them over to the church. Once complete, they will bring you back to your vehicles.
"We had more than 700 kids preregister this year," Cox said. "We always have 100 or more that will come the day of the fair. They can still come the day of the fair and register here. The only thing with that they are not guaranteed to get their school supplies."
Cox said a lot of work has gone into this We Care Fair and is thankful for those who help out.
"It is a great thing, that is one of the things about this, the volume of people who come to it," he said. "There is no way that one church can do it by their self. We have half dozen churches that are here in the community, there are businesses who have donated financially, they are sending volunteers to help us the work the day of."
And the event has grown over the years, including high school students.
"We have 100 high school students that are preregistered," said Cox. "Last year, we only gave out 52 high school bags. one of the things that we noticed on our preregistered the freshmen class, the incoming freshmen we had 41. That was a large number. Eighth graders we had 41 this year."
