Three Neosho children were killed in a traffic crash at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday. The accident occured on Missouri State Highway 86 two miles east of Stark City in Eastern Newton County.

Three Neosho children were killed in a traffic crash at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday.  The accident occured on Missouri State Highway 86 two miles east of Stark City in Eastern Newton County.
7-year old Eric Verde, 4-year old Benjamin Verde, and 2-year old Isaac Verde died when the car they were riding in was struck by a 2015 Peterbilt Tractor Trailer driven by 53 year old Stephen J. Shaffer of Sarcoxie. Verde suffered moderate injuries in the crash.
Shaffer's vehicle was eastbound when he struck a 2010 Chevy Traverse driven by 32-year old Leticia Verde of Neosho. Verde was westbound and lost control of her vehicle, crossing the center line where it was struck in the side in the opposite lane by a third vehicle, a 2001 Chevy Tahoe driven by 38-year old Michael Stephens of Fairview. Verde's vehicle then ran off the roadway and overturned.
The three passengers in her car were pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Newton County Coroner Jerry Deems.
Stephens suffered moderate injuries in the crash. Four passengers in his vehicle were seriously injured and were taken to area hospitals. Shaffer was not injured.
Next of kin have been notified of the fatalities.
