STELLA — In the bright early morning sun of August 18, 2018, a small group of people came to Macedonia Cemetery, just north of Stella, to pay tribute to an old soldier.

Thomas Ferrel, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, lies buried in this Newton County soil that was soft and green under the morning dew.

Boy Scouts from three troops, accompanied by men in Revolutionary War styled uniforms, matched down from the north end of the cemetery, carrying the American flag, the Missouri flag and other flags from the Revolutionary War era, including one from South Carolina where Ferrel served his time in the militia.

The Presentation of Colors was made by the Scouts, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the Invocation.

The Honorable Bill Reiboldt, a member of the Missouri state legislature, read and presented a proclamation to the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). Representative Reiboldt noted the presence of so many young boys taking part. He said he developed an interest in history as a youngster and was glad to see so many young people in attendance.

Ken Lawrence of the SAR gave a brief history of Thomas Ferrel, who was born in 1760 and served in the war in 1781-82. Norman Knowlton gave the benediction.

After the prayer, J. Howard Fish sounded 14 rings on a ceremonial Washington's Bell; 13 for the original 13 colonies and one for General George Washington. Steve Perkins fired a musket in a three-gun salute to Ferrel.

The final act was a presentation of a "Streamer" from the SAR to each Boy Scout troop. The streamer, or ribbon, is to be hung on their troop flag pole in recognition of their service that day.

As members of troops 34, 98 and 55 accepted the streamers, they represented a passage of time between the youth of today and the old soldier who lay at their feet in the ground nearby, guarded by four strategically placed American flags.
