The community of Diamond is mourning the death of long-time resident and World War II veteran John Heckmaster, who died in a two-vehicle accident Wednesday morning.
The accident took place at 8:20 a.m. on Highway 59, a quarter-mile north of Elder Road in front of the cemetery, according to Keith Brumfield, Diamond police chief.
Heckmaster, who Brumfield said was in his 80s but could not provide his exact age, was driving a small-engine motor scooter when he pulled from the shoulder into the southbound lane of traffic and in front of a white F150 truck driving southbound on Highway 59.
