The numbers are in on the East Newton R-6 School District budget for fiscal year 2009-10, and for the first time in three years, the district ended in the black.

For the past year, revenues have come in at $14,489,685, and expenditures were at $14,172,091.

Overall, there was an increase of $320,594 in the budget.

“That’s always a good thing, especially in the economic times now,” East Newton Superintendent Todd McCrackin said.

The Thursday night school board meeting was the final one for fiscal year 2009-10, and the meeting also provided the first look at the preliminary budget for 2010-11.  Preliminary estimates of expenditures for the next year are $13,662,542. The estimate for revenues is $13,667,835. Next month, the board will vote whether or not to approve that preliminary budget.

“We give them (the board) preliminary information, and then the next meeting is when we’ll adopt the budget,” McCrackin said.

“Throughout the course of the year, you’ll amend it because of various reasons…”

Also in the meeting, cost-cutting measures were approved by the board.

The board voted to discontinue reimbursement for background checks.

The East Newton School District requires new teachers to have a background check and then be rechecked every five years. Teachers will now be expected to cover the expenses of the background checks on their own. Also, the board voted to auction off surplus property, such as classroom furniture, kitchen supplies and athletic equipment. The auction will be July 10 at East Newton High School. Budget cuts by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon were also announced at the meeting.

There will be slices to transportation and MOREnet budgets. MOREnet is the district’s Internet provider.

Also, Nixon is cutting a school health grant.

“We pay for a school nurse’s salary out of that,” McCrackin said. “Now that is going to be a district expense.”
