Under the submission of bills, Fairview City Council members decided to approve a bill in question for 4 State Asphalt & Sealing.
“We are just going to go ahead and pay the bill,” Fairview Mayor Sid Oliver said. “I believe that they dropped the interest charges.”
Council agreed to pay $4,000 of the bill.
The original total for the invoice was $5,727.57, along with late fees amounting to $1,777.90.
As far as what was the controversy to start with and why the bill was not paid for earlier, Oliver stated it dated back about two years ago.
“We did not approve that street (Montgomery – to be chip and sealed) and they went ahead and did that street,” he said. “I told them that we could not pay it until I spoke with the (city) attorney (Jared Thomas) to see how we go about paying it. So now (the attorney) has decided that we could pay it. We did not have a city attorney when this occurred.”
“(The company) had some leftover chip and seal and a (now ex) council member said if they had any leftover, ‘go ahead and put it on that street,’” Oliver said.
Oliver stated he thought the bill could be paid “outright.”
The council approved all bills that were submitted during Tuesday’s council meeting.
Under new business, the Fairview City Council approved the purchase of a load of cold mix.
“(The cold mix) is for fixing these potholes in the paved roads, you just shovel it in,” he said. “There are quite a few potholes in the city. You put gravel on the gravel roads, cold mix on the paved roads so it will pack in tight.”
Oliver noted it cost about $300 per load of cold mix. Fairview maintenance will do the job.
Another item on the agenda dealt with the purchase of six water meters at a cost of $291.
“Every now and then, one goes bad and so we replace it,” Oliver said. “There are some that are hard to read, so we just replace them. We change out maybe six to 12 of them a year.”
The next Fairview City Council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Fairview City Hall.
