Another local school district has approved Career Ladder for the 2010-2011 school year.
During last week’s East Newton R-6 School District meeting, the school board heard about a scaled-down Career Ladder plan.

“It involves most of the hours of student tutoring, then you can do a few hours of parent contact and/or of committee work,” said Tanya Vest, superintendent of the school district. “They are abiding by the same qualifications as the original Career Ladder, but it is district paid, it doesn’t have anything to do with state money. That is why they pared it down a little bit. They wanted to still be able to do it and the district wanted to be able to give our teachers some incentive and a little bit extra pay. This plan puts the focus on the students.”

According to Vest, the following revised Career Ladder is as follows:

  • Stage 1: has to have 30 hours of contact hours, five years of teaching experience in Missouri public schools and it pays $750;
  •  Stage 2: has to have 45 hours of contact hours, seven years of teaching experience in Missouri public schools and it pays $1,500, and;
  •  Stage 3: has to have 60 hours of contact hours, 10 years of teaching experience in Missouri public schools and it pays $2,500.

“We are just taking the district portion that has always been there and making our own plan for 2010-2011 school year,” Vest said. “We are going to have approximately 71 who are eligible, that is K-12. That is up a little bit from last year. That is 71 who are eligible, that doesn’t mean that all of them will.”

Vest noted she is seeing more and more school districts doing something for their teachers.

“I think what you are seeing is a lot of them who really want to try to provide some incentives for teachers, while it also benefits the kids,” Vest said. “And this is a really good way to do it, because you are providing that incentive for teachers who tutor, which, in turn, is based on the kids.”
