The Pittsburg State football team has been long known for good blocking tight ends and a solid running game.

The Gorillas added a player that could help out with the blocking and running game in McDonald County’s Logan Sumler, who was an offensive and defensive lineman for the Mustangs.

Sumler, 18, chose PSU over Evangel, Avila and Graceland. He was recruited by a few to play defensive end and the others at tight end.

So, he chose to go to the Division II powerhouse Gorillas and play a position he has never played.

“Size, in college, there was no way I could offensive line,” Sumler said. “I’m about 220 pounds, so I would have to add like 50 pounds at least to play. I will work out a lot this summer and get ready.”
He becomes the fourth tight end signed by new head coach Tim Beck. Previous commitments came from JUCO transfers Mike Noble (Dodge City Community College) and Matt Chanay (Independence Community College) and Blue Springs’ Lane Letchworth II.

Sumler was a Game Night All-Area selection at defensive line as a junior. He was also an offensive tackle for Sean Prices’ football team.

He is the son of Mark and Dana Sumler of Anderson and expects to major in criminal justice at PSU.
