A fire in rural Newton County destroyed a vacant building on Sunday night.
Firefighters from the Redings Mill Fire Protection District responded to 7727 Eland Road to a fully involved structure fire at 10:40 p.m. Sunday night. The fire was out in an hour and 10 minutes. The structure, although still standing, was deemed a total loss.
The cause of the fire is undetermined.
Although no one was living in the home it still had electrical service and firefighters could not rule out a possible electrical fire.
“It’s undetermined right now,” Todd Chlanda, assistant fire chief. “There was so much damage that we could not investigate the area of origin.”
They believe the fire started on the north side of the house near the garage. The owner did not have insurance the home.
Two engines, two tankers and 12 firefighters responded to the fire, one of the first runs for the fire district’s new, custom engine.
