The Seneca R-7 School District voted to retain all their football coaches during a closed-session meeting on Tuesday night.

A hazing incident at a Pittsburg State University football camp brought the coaches actions under review.

Players have already been disciplined – several were suspended from sports as a result of the incident.

The closed session started at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday and wrapped up just before midnight. In a statement issued late Wednesday afternoon, the board said the coaches’ actions had been reviewed.

“There was no evidence that any Seneca coach had any advanced knowledge of the hazing, was aware of the hazing when it occurred, nor attempted in any way to cover up the players’ misconduct,” the statement read. “However, based on a number of considerations including on-site supervision, the board of education voted unanimously to place the head coach and the assistant coaches who were present at PSU on probation for the period of one year.

“Any violation of supervisory duties or violation of board policy or practices will result in disciplinary action. The employment action taken against these coaches is commensurate with their collective responsibilities at PSU.”

The statement also said the board would develop a coaches’ code of conduct and supervision plan for all activities with their legal counsel.

Seneca head football coach Rob Townsend was contacted  by Daily News sports editor Cody Thorn, but did not want to give comment at this time.
