Scholastic, Inc., 3300 Howard Bush Dr., was presented with an expansion award at a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday by the Neosho Area Chamber of Commerce and the Department of Economic Development.
Attending the ceremony were Neosho business, city and civic leaders and state representatives. Scholastic, Inc. was recognized for its recent building expansion with support of the Neosho Area Business & Industry Foundation Inc., which will create an additional 80 jobs. The 5,000-square-foot build out completes the now-30,000-square-foot building.
Scholastic, which has been in Neosho since 1998, was first located on Harmony Street. After a flood in 2008, the company moved to its current location.
Presenting a Missouri House of Representatives resolution, Rep. Bill Reiboldt told how proud he was about the added jobs.
“It is a pleasure to be here and any time that I can be somewhere where we are creating new jobs, hey, that puts a smile on my face,” Reiboldt said.
This expansion with the addition of the 80 jobs has brought their total employment to more than 450 during their peak season.
Neosho Mayor Richard Davidson also commented and congratulated Scholastic for its recent expansion.
“It is exciting to come up and recognize businesses that are expanding,” he said. “Neosho has been very fortunate in the past year to see a tremendous amount of growth both in our commercial and industrial base. When you came here in 1998, you were definitely a economic boost to the local economy. After the flooding event of 2008, your relocation ultimately showed a commitment of Scholastic to our town and also a commitment of our town and our civic leaders to keep you here. And this latest expansion I think shows that the partnership that you share with our community is the strongest that it has ever been.”
NABIFI vice president Ray Stipp also commented on Scholastic occupying the full 30,000-square-feet building, formerly the city spec building.
“The spec building was an effective tool at that time and we found that to be the case with other companies,” Stipp said.
Davidson also talked about the spec building concept.
“The spec building concept worked flawlessly in this situation with Scholastic,” Davidson said. “The city provided the infrastructure needs, private investment through NABIFI built the building, and Economic Development/Chamber of Commerce marketed the property to prospective tenants. It was a win-win for everyone. I hope this combination of public and private support can continue as we work together to grow and expanded our industrial and commercial base.”

Accepting the expansion award and the resolution, Deanna Smithy, senior customer service manager, said, “This is just a wonderful building. We absolutely love it, we are just thankful for being here.”
Also representing Scholastic was Steve Marble, vice president, customer service.
“The jobs themselves are exciting, because it gives us opportunity to invest in the community,” Marble said. “And it is an opportunity for us to have more good employees to support the business. What we are really trying to do is to take advantage of the resources that we have. This facility was available, this spec building worked out great for us. I think, for us, it is really an investment in this community. The management here is very strong.”
