The following candidates are running for their respective political party bids for the post of McDonald County Treasurer in the Aug. 3 election.
Colleen Epperson, Republican
Hometown: Pineville.
Education (High school and/or college/trade schools): MCHS, Anderson. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Missouri Southern State University, Joplin
Current Occupation: Executive Director of the McDonald County Chamber of Commerce
What made you decide to run for public office? As a lifelong resident of McDonald County, I love living here and I want to make a difference, giving back in a sense. I want to see our county government improved. It is within my realm of influence, with my education and experience, to make improvements in our county treasurer’s office. When I read our county’s audit from last October, I realized we have several opportunities in our local government. I can help that. In a follow up visit from the state auditors this month, we still have shortfalls. It is time for a change. I have the education, the experience and the love for our county to care enough to make it better for all. I sought this position because I know I can make a difference and I hope McDonald County people care enough to make it happen.
What are some of your goals if you are elected, not only right away but long term? The treasurer is the custodian of the county’s funds. My goal will be to provide the type of check and balance system required by state law, ensure errors and omissions are detected on a timely basis and provide accurate financial reporting. I will regularly reconcile accounting records with the county clerk and ensure the proper procedures to our county’s assets by challenging the status quo. I will constantly search for and invest in the best and safest depositories, certificates of deposit, securities, interest bearing accounts and Investment Instruments.
“At the same time, the treasurer must ensure that the taxpayer’s money is secure and available. As your treasurer, I will continue to ensure that the taxpayer’s funds are secure and act in the best financial interest of the people of McDonald County always seeking ways to improve procedures. I will analyze what our county government is doing and make ongoing recommendations, looking outward for growth and improvements in all areas that are influenced by my office.
Joye Helm, Republican
Hometown: Pineville
Education (High school and/or college/trade schools): McDonald County High School; Crowder College
Current Occupation: McDonald County treasurer; former county clerk and county clerk officer for 31 combined years
What made you decide to run for public office? I have a genuine concern for how the county government is run. I love McDonald County. I enjoy working for the people of McDonald County and I appreciated the opportunity to work for them.”
