A hopeful future was the title of Granby Christian Church Pastor John Mehrens’ message during Wednesday’s baccalaureate service at East Newton High School.
Mehrens told the more than 30 seniors attending the story of Joseph from the Bible.
“At a very young age, the Bible talks about him being 17 years old, but we don’t know the exact age, he sold into Egypt,” said Mehrens. “He goes and works his head off for his new master, finds favor with that new master, but in the midst of that, again he is deeply disappointed with false accusations. He is sentenced to prison, but even in prison, he rises to the top and seizes the situation, remains faithful to God and hopeful to God that God sees into the dark and sees our hearts and knows what really is going on in our lives. He ultimately is raised to viceroy of Egypt because of his faithfulness to God, the way that he was open to God.”
The event was put on by the East Newton Ministerial Alliance.
Mehrens also passed along some advice in his final comments to the graduating class.
“I wanted to lift the class from any despair that anybody might be casting on them at this time,” he said. “People will discourage young people and they will do it sometimes innocently and maybe sometimes they do it overtly. Let’s just build up this class and say the future is yours by grace through faith in Christ Jesus and may they do exceedingly abundantly what their forefathers did, that is my hope, that is the hope of the gospel.”
During the baccalaureate service, some of the high school seniors led the special music, read from Bible verses and even worship music. Ashleyanne Williams led, and sang, “Mighty to Save,” “Jesus Paid It All,” and “How Great is Our God.” Cara Marks sang “The Word is Alive,” while Arielle Miller sang “Your Grace is Enough,” and Alysha Thomas sang “This is the Stuff.” Dennis Cleaveland, Jr. read from Romans 8:22-28 and Colton Spencer read Genesis 50:14-20.
Graduation is slated for 7 p.m. Friday at the high school.
