A public meeting to discuss Neosho’s Transportation Development District will be held at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Civic Auditorium, 109 E. Main St.

Though the TDD operates at its own political entity, independent of the city while still within its borders, the meeting was scheduled by the City of Neosho so citizens could “discuss or ask questions as it pertains to the progress being made with the TDD,” according to the meeting notice issued Wednesday.

Starting Jan 1, a 20-year, half-cent sales tax has been imposed on purchases made within the TDD, which includes Walmart, Lowe’s and most businesses in-between to ultimately finance construction of new roads and traffic lights within the TDD boundaries. The tax was approved in September by the property owners within the TDD, who were also responsible for creating the district the April prior. That was after a nod from the Newton County Court that a TDD could be formed, as outlined by state law. It is now managed by a TDD board of directors, elected by the property owners.

A letter sent via mass email by Neosho City Manager Troy Royer regarding tonight’s meeting states the following:

Dear Community Leader:

Over the past day or so, a number of questions have been raised about the City’s position on the newly formed Transportation Development District (TDD).  Your current city government feels it is important that members of the community be able to have open and honest dialogue with city leaders about any city business. Discussions involving the TDD are no exception.

As part of our continued commitment to hearing from the citizens of Neosho, the city council has scheduled a special session for Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium. This meeting is open to all citizens. I hope you can attend.

Best regards,

Troy Royer
