New East Newton High School girls basketball coach Joshua Joseph Long, 30, of Oronogo, Mo., was charged with second-degree statutory rape in Jasper County on Friday.

Long was recently hired by the East Newton School District to coach girls basketball at the varsity level beginning this fall.

Long turned in his resignation to the East Newton School District in the wake of the charges, according to one school official.

According to a probable cause statement filed by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Long had sex with the 16-year-old female juvenile.

The victim stated she and her coach, Long, had been texting back and forth about having sex.
She states she went to his house, and that is where the incident occurred. She stated he sent her a nude picture over her cell phone, and she did the same.

During his questioning, according to the probable cause statement, Long first denied all allegations, but then admitted he had sex with the juvenile. He said it occurred three times at his house in Oronogo.

Bond was set at $5,000 in the case. A protection order against Long was filed Tuesday morning in Jasper County Circuit Court, with a hearing set for Aug. 13.
