The identity of a homeless man found dead Tuesday afternoon in Hickory Creek at Morse Park North has been released.

The Neosho Police Department said Timothy Scheffler, 47, of Neosho was found lying in the creek.

“Investigation into the death of Mr. Scheffler indicated there was no criminal activity apparent,” Sgt. Jason Baird, a detective with the police department, said in a prepared statement. “However, the case remains open until a report from the coroner’s office can be obtained. A toxicology screen is under way, and the results are pending.”

Scheffler’s body was removed and taken to Clark Funeral Home in Neosho.
Scheffler had been staying at the Crosslines Guest House, 415 N. High St. His body was discovered in shallow water at approximately 4 p.m. by people walking the gravel trail that parallels the creek, according to Neosho Police Chief Dave McCracken. The location was a short distance north of Morrow Avenue. McCracken said the water was less than a foot deep where Scheffler’s body was found.
