For the second year in a row, Neosho will be represented at a major college football bowl game.
On Monday, the Neosho R-5 School Board gave the green light for the Neosho High School cheerleaders to take part in the halftime show and other festivities at the 51st annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl, which is held on Saturday, Jan. 2, in Memphis, Tenn.
This trip comes on the heels of the Neosho High School Wildcat Band’s performance in January 2009 at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
Angie McCauley, head coach of the NHS cheerleaders, said her squad was referred by an anonymous source to the Bowl Games of America organization, which organizes the halftime show and other festivities surrounding the AutoZone Liberty Bowl and other major bowl games.
“They really would not tell me who referred us,” McCauley said in a telephone interview from Myrtle Beach, S.C., where she is attending a dance competition. “It is great. We learned about the trip about six weeks ago, and that is when I started to put my proposal together. I had to get with the parents, and see if they are willing to take on some of the expense if we do not raise enough money.”
McCauley said the total cost of the trip would be approximately $10,000. She said fund-raising efforts would begin shortly, and be spearheaded by the parents.
“We are going to get together and do some brainstorming on fund-raising,” McCauley said. “The girls might do some letters asking for sponsors, and the girls know about the dollar amount that each of them will need to raise. Then, if there is something I can do to help the parents with their expenses, we will try to do that.”
McCauley said the cheerleaders would be part of a halftime performance. She said bowl organizers have not announced who the halftime live performer will be yet. She also said the cheerleaders would get to perform in the Beale Street parade. Beale Street is a popular destination in Memphis. The cheerleaders will also be able to attend a professional rodeo. The cheerleaders will leave Dec. 30, and return on Jan. 3, 2010.
McCauley said her squad has 16 cheerleaders this coming school year, and 12 will be attending the Liberty Bowl because the others have prior obligations.
“They are so excited,” McCauley said of her squad.
