A former Granby resident achieved a milestone on Thanksgiving. Clayton Ogle, 72, of  the St. Louis area, walked his 50,000th mile.

“In 1985, he started tracking the number of miles walked as kind of a  hobby and to try to get healthier,” said Natasha Bettes Collins, Ogle’s great-niece. On Thanksgiving, he reached 50,000 miles. He walked from City Limit Road to B Highway (in Granby).”

According to Bettes Collins, he walked all over the country and has a pedometer to keep track of his miles.

“He averages about five miles a day,” she said. “He feels great. He walks every day – rain or shine, no matter what, he walks every day and he is in great shape. He is 72 years old and you would never be able to tell it.”

“I am extremely proud of this accomplishment and walking is my favorite hobby,” he said.
Every year at Thanksgiving, Ogle returns to Granby. On that day, he also had 17 family members walk with him.

“We have family from Colorado, Tennessee, from the Ozarks area, we all came in for Thanksgiving together to celebrate this achievement for him and we all walked his 50,000th mile with him,” she said. “We started off Thanksgiving with our family, helped him get his 50,000th mile and then after he hit 50,000, he did one more mile by himself to start a next 50,000.”

Over the years, Ogle has walked on different terrain, including beaches and mountains. Spots he particularly enjoyed were beaches in San Diego, Calif.

“It is relaxing and therapeutic,” said Ogle. “The hardest time I had walking was in St. Louis years ago when the wind-chill was 53 below zero.”

So what is next for Ogle?

“He said if he is able to, absolutely, he said if he keeps about the same rate the has been able to for the last 20 years, then he will be about 99 (years old), when he reaches 100,000 miles,” Collins said.
