It seems the Neosho R-5 Board of Education may have changed its mind concerning the position of assistant superintendent of business and finance.
Dr. Richard Page, superintendent of the Neosho R-5 School District, told the Neosho Daily News Saturday that the school board will address an administrative position during a regularly scheduled board meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Neosho Middle School. A budget work session for the school board will begin at 6 p.m. Monday.
Page said the position to be discussed is the assistant superintendent of business and finance.
“We have added two things to the agenda, one is to open that position and the other one is to make a recommendation who to put into that position,” Page said.
In April, school board officials opted not to fill the assistant superintendent of business and finance position then held by Charles Brazeale.
Brazeale’s last day with the district will be July 1. He accepted a position with the St. Charles School District.
After conducting interviews for the assistant superintendent position, the board decided ultimately not to fill the position. The move was made during closed session.
An attorney with the Missouri Press Association has said the school board vote to eliminate an assistant superintendent’s position should have been held in open session.
One of the candidates for the assistant superintendent position was Jim Cummins, current Carl Junction assistant superintendent and past president of the Neosho High School Booster Club. Cummins is the son of Neosho R-5 School Board member Shirley Cummins, who took a leave of absence from the board when Brazaele announced his resignation and the search for a possible replacement began. Jim Cummins is a Neosho High School graduate.
Page noted that Jim Cummins would likely be the candidate for the position.
During a board meeting on April 19, the board voted — with new member Mike Stauffer and Shirley Cummins voting no — to approve the distribution of duties previously held by the assistant superintendent position to various members of the administration.
