On Monday, those interested in learning about being involved in this year’s Newton County Relay For Life will be able to attend a kickoff meeting.
The event will commence at 6 p.m. Monday at the Lampo Building.
“The main purpose is to gather individuals, spread the word about the American Cancer Society (ACS) and how Relay For Life helps the ACS with funds, to recruit teams,” said Kelly Emanuel, chairperson of the local Relay.
The night’s event includes opening information from Emanuel, followed by a video from Relay For Life National Hall of Famer Jeff Ross, who will deliver a “fight back” speech. Guest speaker of the event will be Ed Burns, Hero of Hope from Nixa, Mo.
Burns, an operations manager at American Heritage C.C., Inc., went to Dixon High School, Dixon, Mo. and is from Los Angeles, Calif.
“His motto: ‘No matter how much it hurts and no matter what the doctors say, until you breathe your last breath and close your eyes for the last time; there is still hope,’” she said. “He will cover his cancer story with the group.”
The event will also include soup, chili, desserts and a paddle auction, along with committee introductions and closing remarks.
This year’s Newton County Relay For Life will be held June 8-9 at Neosho High School’s Bob Anderson Stadium.
Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event. Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fundraising walk in the nation. Relay For Life unites friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools and churches ... people from all walks of life. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of supporting a cure for cancer.
This year’s theme is “Monopoly, Pass Go For a Cure.” The monetary goal is $79,999, with 35 teams goal participation.
“We are encouraging the entire community, particularly cancer survivors/patients, all those who want to take a stand against cancer and to help fundraise, and all previous Relayers and committee members,” she said.
