Registration will soon be under way for the Newton County Food Basket Brigade.
According to Newton County Food Basket Brigade President Robert Allen, “signups for the baskets will begin on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Neosho Help Center, located just off of the Neosho Square. The registration will continue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until Dec. 11.”
The goal of the brigade is to provide food for a traditional Christmas dinner plus basic staples to last up to two weeks for Newton County residents certified as low income, disadvantaged, disabled and/or elderly in need of assistance. Virtually all individuals and families certified to receive food through the Food Basket Brigade are also receiving assistance from DFS, Economic Security Corporation, the Neosho Crosslines, the Help Center and other relief agencies during the brigade.
The basic premise of the basket brigade is that in this land of plenty, nobody should have to go hungry at Christmas.
According to a previous Neosho Daily News article, in 2007, the brigade served 3,411 individuals. In 2006, the number of recipients was 2,606.
Since its beginning in 1988, the food basket brigade has collected more than 1.5 million pounds of food for the Christmas baskets. In the past, the goal is to have 90,000 pounds of food.
Brigade organizers are also asking for volunteers. Those wanting to volunteer may call KBTN 1420 AM at 451-1420 or the Neosho Help Center at 451-0884.
