An excessive heat warning has been issued for Joplin from 11 a.m. today until 7 p.m. Monday, replacing an excessive heat watch.
Newton County is not currently included in the warning, but that is likely to change according to the National Weather Service. The current warning extends west from northwest of Joplin to Warsaw, Mo.
In Joplin the high is forecast at 99 degrees Fahrenheit, but Parsons, Kan. is forecast at 101 and Tulsa, Okla. at 102 – those temperatures are before heat indexes.
A prolonged heat wave caused by a high pressure system anchored over the central U.S. has meteorologists expecting more heat. Humidity and high temperatures will likely push heat indexes across the region to 105 degrees by Monday, the NWS said.
To avoid heat related illness the NWS recommends drinking plenty of fluids – avoiding alcohol and caffeine and using sunscreen to prevent sunburn. Never leave children or animals in a vehicle as temperatures can climb rapidly.
