On Monday, Granby Fire Department received some new fire equipment, thanks to a grant.

“We got new equipment through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security,” Granby Fire Chief Kevin Johnson said. “We got a thermal imaging camera, 12 sets of bunker gear which includes coats, pants, boots, helmets, hoods, gloves, and then we got 10 self contained breathing apparatuses, that is air packs with 10 spare bottles.”

The fire department applied for the grant in 2009.

“We got word in April 2010 that we were not accepted,” he said. “Then in September 2010, they called and asked if we would take a reduced amount from the original grant. The original amount was $110,000 and they cut back to $84,220. That was what we were approved for, the federal share is $80,009, our part is $4,211. We have our quarter cent sales tax, it will come out of that.”

The fire department, which is volunteer, has 25 people on the roster, which also includes reserve people.

“Everybody will have gear, some of it is going to be a couple of years old. The main guys will have all new gear,” Johnson said. “The bunker gear most of the guys carry in their vehicles, because we never know we are going to be when we get a call.”

Johnson is very pleased with the new equipment.

“It is very much needed, greatly appreciated,” he said.

According to a previous article in the Neosho Daily News about the grant and the equipment, the fire department hasn’t had a thermo-imaging camera.

“It will help us find hot spots in the houses, it will seek out if someone is lying in there, the body heat, so search and rescue. It is going to have several options,” Johnson said. “It is a handheld unit, has a little TV screen.”
