A sizeable crowd converged in Diamond Friday and Saturday as the 17th annual Diamond Gem City Days was held.

Events on Friday night included games for the children, cake walks, music, countless food vendors, booths and then the naming of the community leader, woman of the year and business of the year.

At 7 p.m., Preston Wright, emcee, announced the winners of the awards. They were Sue Macy as woman of the year, Steve Carter as community leader of the year and Wayne and Shannon Webb of Webb Chiropractic as business of the year.

“Sue lived in Diamond all of her life,” Wright said. “She is the mother of three children, six grandkids, and four great-grandkids, and she is retired from CBT of Diamond.”

Macy noted she was honored for the recognition. Asked what she thought of Gem City Days, Macy said, “I think that it is a great time to get together and have things working together.”

As Carter approached the stage, Wright told about Carter’s history.

“Steve is currently serving as mayor of Diamond (and has been) since 2001,” Wright said. “Prior to that, he served on the Diamond City Council for 11 years.”

Carter has lived in Diamond since 1972. He was also past president of the booster club, pee wee football league for three years and the Jaycees for three years and is a member of American Legion in Diamond.

“I am extremely honored for this award,” Carter said. “It is a big honor for anyone in any town where you have spent a lot of time and work hard in a town for the people to step forward and recognize you. Since we moved back here, we have participated in everything that we could, school activities, city activities and elections.”

Capping off the awards was Wright telling about Webb Chiropractic.

“The practice was started by Dr. Don Webb in 1975 at the same corner (Route J and 59),” Wright said. “It is still there. Wayne came into practice in 1988, along with his wife, Shannon, and they run the business. Soon a third generation will be there.”

“I am very honored for this award,” Wayne said. “This is our home. We both graduated from Diamond High School, Diamond community is a big part of our life. I have served on city council for a while and school board for a couple of terms.”
