Neosho, Mo. -

Not even a tornado could stop the members of the East Newton High School Class of 2008 from receiving their diplomas.

Sure, the ceremony had to be pushed back nearly a week after the May 10 tornado caused massive damage in Granby, Newtonia and other parts of the eastern side of Newton County, but Sunday’s ceremony finally did mark the end of an educational journey for 117 graduates, and the start of life’s new chapter.

The gymnasium at East Newton High School was near capacity, as parents, family and friends used their programs to fan themselves from the rising temperatures.

The female graduates dressed in red caps and gowns, with their male classmates in blue. The top 10 students were seated in the front row, a fitting tribute to their hard work and dedication during their four years of high school.

Katlyn Peterson is the valedictorian of the class of 2008. Jessica Brust gave the invocation.

“It has been a long ride, and I think our class had a great bond,” said Alaina Lawson, ENHS Class of 2008 salutatorian. “We had our ups and downs, but we are still strong and I am thankful for that.”

Lawson then referenced the tornado and the damage it left in its wake.

“I am thankful no one is missing, and no one is not here today,” she said. “We have some classmates who have lost their homes, but I am thankful everyone is here today.”

She then shared some advice for her classmates.

“We need to take advantage of each day that we have,” Lawson said. “We need to live each day to the fullest. This is our time. I encourage all of you to take advantage of these opportunities. Congratulations, Class of 2008.”

Don Johnston, retired principal of East Newton High School, served as the keynote speaker for the commencement ceremony.

“Every one of you here today as achieved a goal set for you,” he told the graduating class. “What we are needing in this country is leadership. You are going to have to step up and lead something or someone. You have to have good character. Character has to do with honesty, integrity, love, passion, and credibility and on and on.

“A good leader always leads out front, leads by example. Take responsibility and show them how to do the job. Strive for perfection, and hang tough and never, ever give up.”
